Short answer: Kitchens and bathrooms need attention weekly. Floors, dusting and bed linen suit a weekly or fortnightly rhythm. Ovens, refrigerators, windows and baseboards are quarterly to twice-yearly jobs. Grout, upholstery and light fittings are annual.
Weekly, and non-negotiable
Kitchen surfaces, sink and hob. Bathrooms in full — toilet, basin, shower or bath, mirror, floor. Bins emptied. High-touch points: door handles, light switches, taps, the refrigerator handle. Everything else in a house can slip a week without real consequence; these cannot, because they are either hygiene or they compound.
Every one to two weeks
Vacuuming throughout, though homes with pets or children realistically need it more. Hard floors mopped. Dusting of reachable surfaces. Bed linen changed — weekly if anyone in the house has allergies, fortnightly otherwise. Mirrors and interior glass.
Monthly to quarterly
Inside the microwave, if it has not become obvious sooner. Baseboards and door frames. Light switches and plates in detail. Under and behind movable furniture. Window sills. Extractor and range hood filters. Vents and returns. These are the jobs a normal weekly clean never reaches, and the ones that make a house feel tired even when it is technically clean.
Twice a year
Inside the oven. Inside the refrigerator, properly — including the drip channel and the door seal. Interior windows with tracks and screens. Curtains and blinds. Mattresses turned and vacuumed. Behind large appliances.
Once a year
Grout, scrubbed and resealed where appropriate. Upholstery and rugs. Light fittings and ceiling fans. Wardrobes and cupboards emptied and cleaned inside. Radiators, including behind the fins.
Weekly or biweekly service — how to choose
Choose weekly if you have children at home, pets that shed, someone with allergies, or you simply want to stop thinking about it. Choose biweekly if it is one or two adults, the house is reasonably tidy day to day, and nobody is home during the day making mess. Biweekly is what most of our clients settle on. Monthly works, but be honest that it functions as a partial reset rather than maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
Is biweekly cleaning enough?
For most households, yes. It is what the majority of our clients choose. Homes with pets, small children or allergy sufferers usually do better weekly.
How often should bed linen be changed?
Weekly if anyone has allergies or asthma, fortnightly otherwise. Pillowcases more often than sheets if you are choosing one to do more.
Do I really need a deep clean every year?
For most homes, yes — grout, appliance interiors, window tracks and light fittings accumulate regardless of how well the weekly cleaning is done.
What if I clean between visits?
Most clients do, and it makes a real difference to what a visit can achieve. Tell us what you handle yourself and we will focus the time elsewhere.
