Clean glass above a dirty track is not a clean window

This is the whole thing. Anyone looking at a window takes in the glass, the frame and the track as one object. A spotless pane sitting above a channel full of grit, dead insects and black sludge reads as dirty, and no amount of extra work on the glass changes that impression.

How tracks are actually done

Vacuum first with a crevice tool to lift the loose debris — going in wet immediately turns dust into a paste that is far harder to remove. Then a stiff brush and cleaner along the channel, into the corners where the sash sits, and a final wipe. The drainage weep holes at the outer edge should be clear; blocked ones are a real cause of water sitting in the track and eventually finding its way inside.

The rebate and the frame

The rebate — the recess the sash closes into — collects a black line of dirt that is invisible when the window is shut and obvious the moment it is open. On uPVC it also holds mould in the corners if there has been condensation. This is a five-minute job per window that most cleaning skips entirely.

Screens

Insect screens go grey with a fine layer of dust and pollen that cuts visible light noticeably. They lift out on most modern windows, brush down outside, and go back. People are often surprised how much brighter a room is afterwards — it was the screens, not the glass.

Why glass streaks

Too much product and a cloth that is not clean. Glass needs very little cleaner and a genuinely dry, lint-free finish. Direct sunlight is the other cause: it dries the solution before it can be worked, guaranteeing streaks. Do a sunlit window early or late, not in the middle of the day.
