Short answer: A standard clean of a typical three-bedroom home takes two to three hours. A deep clean of the same house takes four to eight. A move-out clean of an empty three-bedroom property usually takes four to six hours.
Bathrooms drive the time, not floor area
A bathroom takes roughly as long as two bedrooms. All the slow work in a house is concentrated there: descaling, glass, grout, fixtures, and surfaces that show every mark. Two houses of identical size with one and three bathrooms are not remotely the same job, which is why any quote based purely on square footage is guessing.
Rough timings for a standard clean
- One-bedroom apartment — 1 to 1.5 hours
- Two-bedroom, one bathroom — 1.5 to 2.5 hours
- Three-bedroom, two bathrooms — 2 to 3 hours
- Four-bedroom, three bathrooms — 3 to 4.5 hours
- Add for a deep clean — roughly double to triple the above
What makes it take longer
Clutter, first and foremost — time spent moving your possessions is time not spent cleaning. Then pets, for the additional vacuuming. Then hard water, which turns bathrooms from a wipe into a descale. Then stairs, which are slow and which people forget entirely when estimating. Then how long it has been since the last proper clean.
Why a very fast quote is a warning sign
If someone offers to clean a four-bedroom house in ninety minutes, something is being skipped, and it will be the invisible things: behind the toilet, the shower glass at an angle, skirtings, the inside of the microwave. The visible middle of every room will look fine. That is exactly the kind of clean that seems acceptable for a fortnight and then obviously is not.
Two people or one
Two cleaners in a house are not twice as fast, but they are faster — roughly a third quicker in practice, once you account for coordination and equipment sharing. What two people do change is disruption: they are in and out in half the elapsed time, which matters if you are home or if it is an office.
What this means for booking
Ask for the estimated duration as well as the price, then judge whether it is plausible for your house. A company quoting per job should be able to tell you both. Ours are on the house cleaning and deep cleaning pages.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a deep clean take?
Four to eight hours for a typical family home, occasionally more where there is heavy buildup. Larger homes are sometimes split across two days.
Why does my cleaner take longer than the quote?
Usually clutter or condition. We quote per job rather than per hour, so if it takes longer than expected that is our problem, not an extra charge.
Is it faster if I am not home?
Marginally, yes — mostly because rooms can be done in the most efficient order rather than worked around.
How long for a move-out clean?
Four to six hours for an empty three-bedroom property, longer if the oven and bathrooms are in poor condition.
