Why a Pennsylvania winter needs a specific list
Generic spring cleaning lists are written for nowhere in particular. Winter here leaves four specific things behind: road salt and grit carried in on shoes, condensation and the mould it grows on cold surfaces, months of dust from running heating in a closed house, and windows that have not been opened since October.
Start with the windows
This is the single job that changes how a house feels in spring, and it is the one most people leave until last. Interior glass, frames, sills and tracks — the tracks especially, which have collected a winter of grit and dead insects. Take the screens out and brush them down; people are consistently surprised how much brighter a room is afterwards, because it was the screens dimming the light rather than the glass.
Salt and grit at every entrance
Road salt is abrasive and it is corrosive. It sits in entry mats, in the grout of tiled entries, along skirtings by the door and in the pile of any rug near it. Left in place it grinds into floor finishes all year. Vacuum thoroughly first, then wash — and wash the mats themselves rather than just shaking them out.
Condensation mould
Check the corners of window reveals, the silicone seal around bath and shower, and the ceiling above the shower. A winter of warm damp air against cold glass grows mould in exactly those places. Catch it in spring and it wipes off with an appropriate treatment; leave it and it works into the silicone, at which point the seal needs replacing rather than cleaning.
The deep jobs, in a sensible order
- Inside the oven and inside the refrigerator, including the drip channel and door seal
- Grout in kitchen and bathrooms, scrubbed and resealed where appropriate
- Baseboards, door frames and switch plates throughout
- Light fittings, ceiling fans, vents and returns
- Behind and underneath furniture and large appliances
- Curtains, blinds and upholstery
- Radiators, including between the fins
Air the house properly
Not for ten minutes. Open windows on opposite sides of the house on the first genuinely mild day and leave them for a couple of hours. Months of closed-up heated air is the reason a house can be spotless and still smell stale, and no amount of cleaning products substitutes for actually changing the air.
