Cleaning Up After Guests: A Realistic Order of Work

Short answer: Before bed, do only what gets worse overnight: bin the rubbish, deal with food, blot any spills, and rinse anything sticky. Everything else keeps until morning and will not be improved by doing it exhausted.

The only jobs that cannot wait

Three things get materially worse overnight. Food left out, which is a hygiene problem by morning. Liquid spills on fabric, which set as they dry. And anything sticky on a floor, which cures into something far harder to remove. Deal with those three, put the rubbish out, and go to bed. Everything else is the same job tomorrow.

Red wine, straight away

Blot, never rub — rubbing drives it into the fibre and spreads the edge. Blot with a clean white cloth from the outside inwards, then cold water and blot again. Salt genuinely helps on carpet by drawing liquid out while it is still wet. Do not use hot water, which sets the pigment, and do not reach for a supermarket spot cleaner, which frequently sets the stain permanently and leaves a patch that attracts dirt afterwards.

Candle wax

Let it harden completely — it is far easier to remove solid than smeared. Scrape off what lifts with a plastic edge, then place a paper towel over the residue and apply a warm iron. The wax melts into the paper. Repeat with clean paper until nothing more transfers. This works on carpet, on tablecloths and on wooden surfaces where the finish can take gentle heat.

The morning order

Kitchen first, because it is the worst and because everything else is easier once the sink is usable. Then bathrooms, which get more use during a party than people expect. Then living space: glasses, surfaces, then floors. Floors always last — anything else you do will put something on them.

Grease and the things people forget

Cooking grease spreads further than you think. Cabinet fronts near the hob, the range hood and its filter, the wall behind, and the tops of cabinets all pick up a film during a big cooking session. Also: the underside of the dining table, where hands go; the outside of the refrigerator handle; and the bin itself, not just the liner.

Smell

Open windows properly rather than reaching for an air freshener — a fresh smell on top of a stale one is worse than either. Take the rubbish out of the house entirely, empty the dishwasher filter, and check the kitchen drain, which after a party has had things put down it that it normally does not.

When to get help

After a large gathering, a holiday weekend, or hosting family for several days, a one-off deep clean is a legitimate use of money and a common booking for us. December and early January are our busiest weeks for exactly this reason, so ask earlier than feels necessary.
