Short answer: Ask whether you get the same cleaner each visit, whether the quote is fixed or hourly, whether they are insured, what happens if something is missed, and how to cancel. Vague answers to any of those are the warning sign.

Same cleaner, or whoever is free?

This is the question that predicts satisfaction better than any other. Someone who cleans your home repeatedly learns it — which floor cannot take water, which shower needs descaling, where the dog hair collects. A rotating roster starts from zero every visit, and the standard visibly drifts. Agencies and platforms usually cannot promise consistency; owner-operated companies can.

Fixed quote or hourly?

Hourly pricing puts the risk on you: if the job takes longer, you pay more, and you have no way to verify the estimate before committing. A fixed per-job quote puts the risk on the company. Ask for the price in writing, and ask specifically what would change it.

Insurance

Ask directly, and expect a straight answer. Any legitimate company carries liability cover and will confirm it without hesitation. Hesitation or deflection here is the single clearest signal to walk away.

What happens when something is missed

Everyone misses something eventually; what matters is what happens next. A serious company will come back and put it right without argument. Ask what the policy is before you book, not after — the answer tells you a great deal about how they will behave when there is a problem.

Read the reviews properly

Volume matters less than pattern. Look for reviews mentioning reliability and consistency over time rather than a single great clean, and check whether complaints get a response. A business with thirty reviews and no complaints is telling you something different from one with three hundred and a steady trickle of unresolved ones.

Platform or local business?

Booking platforms are convenient and genuinely useful for a one-off. For ongoing cleaning they tend to send whoever is available, the person doing the work keeps a fraction of what you pay, and there is nobody with a reputation at stake in your specific house. A local owner-operated business has both of those things aligned in your favour.
